Staying clean never goes out of style. But the products we use come and go. Today, people tend to use body washes and shower gels. Back in the day, we were all about the bars. Of course, soaps were a major sponsor of early television. Soap operas, anyone?
We've gathered some vintage suds. They were marketed to housewives, men and children. A few brands exist in other forms today. Did your family have these by the sink?

9. Wirecutter

The array of brands, styles, and types of soap out there can be dizzying. But in this case, the answer to the best type of soap to use is both simple and easily within your grasp: Use the soap you already have. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, soap is defined as a fat or oil (including either animal fats or plant oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or palm oil) that has been treated with an alkali (such as lye) to make alkali salts of fatty acids. The reason soap is effective has to do with what happens on a molecular level when soap and the coronavirus meet.
“This particular virus is coated with a lipid coat,” Erin Sheets, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Minnesota Duluth, told us. Also in that lipid envelope are membrane proteins—the spike proteins that recognize the proteins inside your lungs to infect you. Those proteins need to have that lipid membrane to work. What soap is doing is actually dissolving and washing away those lipids. Any soap will do the trick, she said. Whether it’s liquid soap or bar soap, fancy-pants soap, or from the farmer’s market. Cheap soap works great, even the little hearts and seashells soap in your grandma’s bathroom.

10. Lush

Since 1995, Lush has been a trailblazer in the cosmetics industry. From inventing bath bombs and creating new, innovative products to fighting animal testing and ethical campaigning, it’s come a long way since its humble beginnings. Mark Constantine and Liz Weir first met in the early ‘70s while working at a beauty salon in Poole, England. Mark was a trichologist and Liz was a beauty therapist. Both were interested in natural beauty products, so decided to create a business of their own.
The duo developed Constantine & Weir making products for local herbalists and salons, including The Body Shop. Later, with the help of Mo Constantine, Rowena Bird, and Helen Ambrose, they’d concoct small batches of products made from their own recipes. As The Body Shop gained popularity, owner Anita Roddick bought their bestselling formulas and parted ways, leaving Constantine & Weir free to start a new venture.
