Vroman’s Bookstore was founded in 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman. Born in 1856 in La Salle, Illinois, Mr. Vroman moved to Pasadena, California in the late 1800s hoping the weather would improve his wife Esther’s health. Sadly, Esther died two years later, and the brokenhearted Mr. Vroman sold his beloved book collection to raise the capital to open a bookstore. Mr. Vroman loved books and loved giving back to his community. With their writing tools becoming obsolete, pen stores have folded, including a century-old shop in New York. Walking into Daly’s Pen Shop in Milwaukee, Wis. is like leaping back in time. Ninety-year-old, custom-made wood storage cabinets line the walls, antique ink bottles lurk on the shelves, and Sinatra songs serenade customers as they walk in.
Daly’s opened in downtown Milwaukee in 1924, when most business and correspondence were done on paper. Bodart says he doesn’t know of an older pen store that’s still in business. While he may not be able to beat the prices you can find online, Bodart is hoping that people continue to value the experience his shop provides — feeling the weight of a well-made pen. And, yes, actually writing something with it.

I was recently on vacation in Colorado at my in-laws up in the mountains (you really should visit Summit County if you get the chance) and whenever I’m in Colorado, I try to finagle a pen meetup while I’m there. Huge thanks to the Colorado Pen Posse for organizing a great meetup! It was so much fun that I barely had time to check out the Meininger Art Material store in Denver on my way to the airport! I’m not positive if the shop is “Meininger Art Material” or “Meininger Art Supply” as their website makes reference to both, so I’m just going to call it “Meininger”.
First and foremost, Meininger is an art supply store. And a huge one at that! As soon as I walked in, I could see that this would be a fun place to spend lots of time (and money). There are two floors of art supply goodness here - which I didn’t have time to explore - from paper to canvas, to paints, brushes, and more, they have pretty much anything you need to unleash your inner artist.
